The Basic Steps in Producing Music

Producers each have their own way of creating music. In a production process of a song, each one has his own particular style which distinguishes one from the other. However, no matter how creative one is, a similar process in producing a track is followed.

And for beginners, here are the five stages of music production that one should be familiar with and learn to master:

Stage 1: Forming the Idea

In every story, there is a theme. And just like a story, you need to have a core conception for the song. So be clear what you want to create with it or what you want to convey.

So, from the start, imagine how you want it to sound-what it's beats will be-and what instruments you will use to achieve the rhythm you want.

Stage 2: Recording, Tracking, and Arranging the Music

This is where everything is done. The instrumentals, the vocals, and so on are recorded, tracked, and arranged. The recording process is usually done once the song is written and approved of by the artist or the producer. After which, the music will be fine-tuned and finalised for final production.

Stage 3: Editing

This part is where you will cut, trim, copy, paste, and nudge the different parts of the record.

Stage 4: Mixing

This is the stage where you adjust the volume levels, equalisation (EQ) and put effects to make the final track. Certain adjustments such as the pitch and rhythm correction are necessary in creating a clean and complete song.

Stage 5: Mastering

When you have the complete track ready, a mastering engineer should finalise it for the public to listen. Set off your song to a good mastering house with quality equipment and professional knowledge. Contact the Old Street Studios for more details.
